Where Should You Go in Vietnam in December?

We favor the south for a December beach break; choose the north for cooler days and leave more flexibility on the central coast.

Phu Quoc (Phú Quốc), in the morning.

You are choosing a December trip and find beach photos from Phu Quoc beside pictures of people bundled up in Sa Pa. Both fit the season, but they call for different plans. We would head south for warm-weather downtime, north for city walks and cooler air, and keep a central-coast itinerary flexible enough to absorb rain.

Give a short vacation one main climate

For a brief visit, staying within one region usually gives you more usable time. Each change of base includes packing, a transfer, waiting, and checking in again. If you have only a few nights, we would spend them at the destination rather than use them to sample every weather pattern in the country.

A longer north-to-south journey can work well, but plan activities locally. Rain on the central coast does not describe the beaches farther south. A hot afternoon in Ho Chi Minh City says little about a mountain morning. Choosing the right season for each region of Vietnam is more useful than searching for one nationwide promise of good weather.

Three cities show the difference

These are climate averages for 1991-2020. Temperatures show the mean daily minimum and maximum, not the coldest and hottest conditions you might encounter. Rainfall is the average monthly total. Neither figure forecasts the weather on your travel dates.

CityDecember temperaturesMonthly rainfall
Hanoi15.4-22.1°C24 mm
Da Nang20.5-25.3°C272 mm
Ho Chi Minh City (Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh)23.9-31.6°C41 mm

Do not apply Hanoi’s figures to a high mountain trail, or use the Ho Chi Minh City rainfall total to judge conditions on an island boat trip. We use averages to narrow the route, then check a destination forecast before committing to outdoor activities. A flexible afternoon is often more useful than another advance reservation.

Choose an island for rest, a city for variety

Phu Quoc is our preference when the main aim is several nights in one place near the sea. Choose the area according to how you want to eat and get around. A remote resort can work beautifully for a quiet stay, but compare the room, meals, and transport together. The cheapest room is less compelling if every dinner requires a car.

Swim only in designated buoyed areas with lifeguards present and flags permitting. Postpone for thunderstorms, heavy rain, or warnings. Boat trips should leave only when authorized, and alcohol should wait until after the outing. Pregnant travelers, young children, and people with underlying health conditions should seek medical advice before sea activities. A favorable season does not guarantee a safe departure every day.

Ho Chi Minh City suits a trip built around food, museums, and an optional delta excursion. Keep a shaded or air-conditioned lunch break rather than walking through the entire middle of the day. With limited time, choose between an island stay and a river day instead of trying to give both a rushed slot between flights.

Go for the mountains without counting on snow

Sa Pa in December calls for proper warm clothing, especially for walking and overnight stays at elevation. Ask about heating, hot water, and somewhere to dry clothes. A room that looks appealing in a photograph can be uncomfortable when cold and damp. Several manageable layers give you more control than one bulky coat worn over unsuitable clothes.

We would not book a trip around a promise of snow or a perfectly timed cloud inversion. Visibility changes, and December terraces are not the golden fields shown in harvest photographs. Choose a walking route that matches your fitness, arrange a guide where needed, and postpone when warnings make the route unsafe. The decisions involved in choosing a Sa Pa trek come before selecting a homestay from its balcony view.

Ha Giang needs time for mountain roads and breaks. Do not let a photo itinerary dictate riding into dense fog. Riders need the appropriate legal permission and actual experience for the conditions; alcohol has no place before driving. For a first visit without mountain-road experience, we would choose an experienced driver rather than make the vacation a test of confidence.

Leave space around heritage visits

Rain does not make Hue, Da Nang, or Hoi An impossible to enjoy. It does make them a weaker choice for a December trip devoted entirely to swimming. Choose accommodation near meals, keep bookings changeable where practical, and have an indoor activity available. When flood or landslide warnings affect a route, postpone the journey instead of experimenting with an unfamiliar detour.

For Hoi An, ask about access to the property during heavy rain as well as the room’s floor. An upstairs room does not solve an unusable entrance road. For Da Nang, avoid prepaying every viewpoint-dependent outing if the view is your main reason to go. A museum and a long lunch can fill a wet day comfortably without hunting for extra attractions.

Book around the evening you want

Check specific Christmas and New Year event schedules before choosing a hotel around them. Ask whether a special dinner is compulsory and included. We would select a quieter room for an early bedtime, or a walkable base for an announced event we intend to attend. Agree on a meeting point before the celebration gets crowded, especially if the group plans to separate.

For a journey through several regions, pack a rain layer, compact warm clothing, and walking shoes with grip. Keep medication, identification, and a dry change of clothes easy to reach. Separate mountain clothes from beach clothes so that each short stay does not require unpacking everything. Before the final transfer, check the operator’s latest notice and leave enough time to handle a changed departure calmly.

FAQ

How many regions would you fit into a week?

We would choose one main region and a nearby addition. Add a second region only when it is a real priority of the trip.

Should I rent a scooter immediately on arriving somewhere cold?

We would settle in first, then decide after checking conditions, legal eligibility, and our own readiness to ride.

Do several climates require two suitcases?

We prefer one organized bag with separate packing cubes and a small day bag for items needed in transit.
