7 Things to Do in Ho Chi Minh City (Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh)

With a weekend in the city, we suggest choosing a few neighborhood clusters and keeping lunch unhurried, rather than adding the tunnels to every plan.

Independence Palace (Dinh Độc Lập), Ho Chi Minh City, a September 2019 afternoon.

Exploring Ho Chi Minh City is more like choosing several different city experiences than working through one compact historic center. A palace visit, a morning in the Chinese trading quarter and a river journey each show a different side. We suggest choosing from the seven ideas below according to your interests. With two days, leave enough room to eat and rest instead of trying to complete every stop.

Plan two main areas a day

For one day, we would stay around the center, choose a major historic site and leave the evening for a riverside walk. A second day lets you add another neighborhood or an activity that particularly interests you. A tunnel excursion outside the center needs its own substantial block of time. It does not fit neatly between two restaurant bookings downtown.

Choose accommodation with the first part of your day in mind, but allow more than the map’s travel estimate. Finding entrances, waiting for rides, crossing streets and stopping for water all take time. For older family members, we suggest one principal morning visit, a proper midday rest and a shorter afternoon. A gap after lunch also keeps a shower from disrupting every later appointment.

Seven ways to build your visit

Walk around the Central Post Office

A central sightseeing cluster

The Central Post Office (Bưu điện Thành phố) gives you an interior to examine as well as a place to send a postcard. Leave room for people using postal services. Nearby Notre Dame Cathedral (Nhà thờ Đức Bà) is worth viewing from the public area, but do not build your schedule around guaranteed access inside. Religious activities and building works can limit entry, so keep the rest of your morning independent of that door.

Spend time at Independence Palace

Standard adult admission VND80,000

The palace is at 135 Nam Ky Khoi Nghia Street (Nam Kỳ Khởi Nghĩa), Ben Thanh ward (Bến Thành). Published hours are daily from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., except for specially announced closures. Adult admission is VND80,000, with VND40,000 for students and older visitors and VND20,000 for children from 6 to under 16.

We would allow around two hours as a planning estimate, choosing a theme such as room layouts, architecture or a particular part of the history. Check the ticket’s scope before adding any separate exhibition or service. Pausing to understand a few rooms gives more value than photographing the facade and immediately leaving for the next building.

Visit the War Remnants Museum (Bảo tàng Chứng tích Chiến tranh)

Allow attention and an emotional break

Choose this for an understanding of war and its consequences. Some imagery is distressing, so families should consider their children’s ages and explain the setting beforehand. Read selectively and take breaks rather than forcing yourself through every room. Confirm the day’s admission arrangements and last entry directly, especially if you are arriving near the end of the afternoon.

Browse Ben Thanh Market (chợ Bến Thành)

Pair it with a meal

The market fits into a central day, but we would not devote the entire morning to souvenir shopping. Establish the price and unit before buying, and choose items you can assess. Then make time for broken rice, noodles or a sandwich. A meal is a useful part of seeing the city, rather than an interruption between sights.

Explore Cholon (Chợ Lớn)

A separate neighborhood outing

The trading quarter offers a different setting from the downtown walk. At Thien Hau Temple (chùa Bà Thiên Hậu), notice the incense coils and courtyard details while leaving worshippers space. Ask before photographing individuals. We prefer several nearby stops and a meal in the area to racing back downtown for a restaurant simply because it was already on a list.

Take a Saigon Waterbus journey

Standard return fare VND30,000

The regular waterbus advertises VND30,000 for an outward and return journey. Distinguish it from sightseeing cruises and other products sold by the operator. Choose your destination pier and return sailing before paying. A seat in one direction does not establish that you can come back whenever you feel ready.

Travel only when departures are authorized, follow life-jacket instructions and avoid alcohol before and during the trip. Postpone in thunderstorms or heavy rain. Pregnant travelers, people with medical conditions and families with young children should seek medical advice beforehand. We prefer enough daylight to see the banks over a rigid plan built around a single sunset departure.

Ride Metro Line 1 and take an evening walk

Choose a useful destination

Use the metro for a journey with something you want to do near the arrival station. Check current fares and payment instructions at the ticket machine or official channel before entering. You do not need to ride the entire line and turn straight around to include it in a short visit. Nguyen Hue Walking Street (Nguyễn Huệ) is another straightforward evening choice before dinner near your accommodation.

Give the Cu Chi Tunnels (địa đạo Củ Chi) a separate half-day or longer

This is a history-focused choice rather than a compulsory addition. Ask which tunnel site the trip visits, pickup and return times, actual time at the attraction, admission and guiding language. If you dislike confined spaces, discuss the above-ground parts instead of assuming you must enter a tunnel. We would not combine the excursion with Cholon and two major museums on the same day.

Leave flexibility for rain

The usual rainy season runs from May to November, with a drier period from December to April. Rain does not necessarily occupy a whole day, but avoid placing every outdoor walk in the afternoon and assuming any shower will be brief. During heavy rain, thunderstorms or street flooding, wait somewhere sheltered and change the route. Do not wade through water when you cannot judge the surface below.

Step back from the curb to check your phone. Carry a compact bag close to your body and keep documents and money you do not need that day secured. These small habits make walking easier without requiring you to monitor every person around you.

Our two-day arrangement

Use the first morning for the post office, an exterior cathedral view and the palace. After lunch and a break, choose the museum if you have the attention for it, then keep the evening walk short. Spend the second morning in Cholon and choose a waterbus or metro journey later. If the tunnels are your priority, replace that second morning and keep the afternoon lighter.

A Mekong Delta outing from the city needs another day rather than an extra stop. For a shorter stay, the southern dishes you choose for each meal can add variety without another long transfer.

FAQ

Should a solo traveler prebook every ride?

We would reserve journeys with fixed timing and leave short city rides flexible around weather and energy.

Should I change hotels to explore Cholon?

For a short visit, we would keep one base and make a neighborhood outing. Changing rooms usually adds more work than it saves.

What if someone wants to skip the war imagery?

Split up for the museum visit and meet for a meal or rest afterward. A shared trip does not require everyone to view the same material.
