Ben Tre (Bến Tre): Make a Day of the Canals
If you have one free day in Ho Chi Minh City (Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh), we suggest a focused canal outing; save the floating market for an overnight stay.

A canal outing near Ben Tre is a different trip from an early morning at Cai Rang Floating Market (Cái Răng). For a return journey from Ho Chi Minh City, we suggest concentrating on My Tho or Ben Tre. If the floating market is the reason you are going, spend the previous night in Can Tho (Cần Thơ) instead. Trying to combine both usually gives the road too much of your day.
Pick the experience before the destination list
A day trip works well when you want a boat ride, a little time in the countryside, and lunch before returning to the city. Choose a program centered on one area rather than a long list of towns. Repeated transfers between buses, boats, and shopping stops can make a full itinerary feel surprisingly thin.
Cai Rang is an early-morning market in Can Tho. Staying overnight gives you a much more sensible start. If a tour leaves Ho Chi Minh City after breakfast and promises the bustling morning market, ask for the actual arrival time and sequence of stops. A visit to a river landing is not necessarily a visit during active trading.
| Your priority | Our choice | What to accept |
|---|---|---|
| Canals and lunch, back the same day | My Tho or Ben Tre | Leave Cai Rang for another trip |
| The floating market | A night in Can Tho | Another day and a room to pay for |
| Less tiring travel | A private car and fewer stops | A higher transport cost for the group |
Give the boat ride room to breathe
Ben Tre’s coconut country lends itself to a day built around waterways and small local industries. We would choose a trip that explains which sections use a motorboat, which use a rowing boat, and how much walking is involved. “Explore the Mekong” tells you very little about how you will actually spend the time.
A coconut-candy workshop can be a worthwhile stop when you have time to watch the work rather than just enter the shop. Ask how many demonstrations and sales stops are included. You are free to enjoy the explanation without buying anything afterward. We prefer a program with a clear stretch on the water and a proper lunch break over one that keeps adding short visits.
For lunch, look for a straightforward shared meal and somewhere comfortable to sit. Crispy fish with vegetables and rice is one possible choice, but dietary needs should shape the booking. Tell the organizer about allergies before the day, including whether fish sauce, peanuts, or shellfish are a problem. A vegetarian main course is not enough if the soup or dipping sauce contains ingredients you avoid.
Compare what the price includes
A group tour removes the job of arranging each connection. Compare the maximum group size, pickup location, included meals, boat charges, and any compulsory extras. A low headline price is hard to assess when lunch and the boat are paid separately. Ask for the total for your party, including children, rather than calculating from an unexplained adult price.
Also ask where the minibus collects you. A central meeting point may be more predictable than a long hotel-pickup circuit. Get the return drop-off in writing and avoid a tight onward flight that evening. We would leave the next major journey until the following day, especially if the delta outing is your only opportunity to slow down outside the city.

If cycling is included, check the route and the alternative for anyone who does not ride. The group needs suitable bikes, helmets, and a place to leave luggage. A non-rider should have a comfortable waiting arrangement. Skip cycling during thunderstorms or heavy rain, and do not treat a slippery lane as an activity that must be completed because it is printed on the schedule.
The intercity bus is only one part of the journey
Independent travel suits visitors who have already arranged a host, boat, or meeting point at the destination. Before buying the bus ticket, check the exact terminal, whether a shuttle is included, and how you will reach the river. A town name on a booking does not mean you will be dropped beside the correct boat landing.
Arrange the return connection before setting off on the water. For several travelers, add the bus tickets, local rides, and boat together, then compare the whole sum with a private car and separately arranged activity. Per-person prices can hide the cost to a family. Carry the meeting pin offline, plus the organizer’s phone number and your accommodation address.
My Tho and Ben Tre remain useful destination names, but newer administrative addresses may use different province names. My Tho is in Dong Thap (Đồng Tháp), while the Ben Tre area is in Vinh Long (Vĩnh Long) following provincial restructuring. Send the property or landing pin rather than relying only on the province field in an app.
Plan the morning around trading
Cai Rang is a working market, not a staged performance with a fixed cast of boats. Old photographs cannot guarantee the level of activity on your morning. Choose accommodation convenient for the agreed pickup, confirm when the boat leaves, and decide whether breakfast on the river is included. Put the market before optional garden or workshop visits.
A private boat gives you more control over the order of stops. A shared departure can reduce the cost, but it needs equally clear terms. Confirm the total, duration, passenger count, boarding point, and optional extras before stepping aboard. Establish whether a quoted amount is per person or for the entire boat; that distinction is much easier to settle on land.

Do not confuse canals with seasonal floodplains
A coconut-lined canal trip does not become a flood-season excursion simply because it takes place in the delta. If broad flooded fields are what you want, choose a route designed for the relevant area rather than adding them to a short Ben Tre itinerary. For a single day from the city, we would keep the journey compact and save a different landscape for a longer visit.
Wear a properly fitted life jacket and stay seated as directed. Boats should depart only when permitted. Avoid alcohol before and during the ride; postpone for thunderstorms, heavy rain, or flood warnings. Young children, pregnant travelers, and people with underlying conditions should get medical advice before river activities. A quiet-looking canal is still moving water.
Keep the return evening simple. If you have another free morning, time around central Ho Chi Minh City is easier to add than stretching the delta trip late into the night.
FAQ
Should I take a full-size suitcase on a day trip?
Leave it with your accommodation if you are returning there. Otherwise, agree on luggage storage with the organizer before booking.
When should I buy fruit to take back?
We would buy near the end and choose an amount that is easy to carry. Ask for packaging that will keep juice out of your bag.
What if someone gets carsick?
Tell the transport provider when booking and ask a clinician or pharmacist about suitable preparation. Do not borrow another traveler’s medication.
