Can I Swim in Nha Trang in January?
We like January for walks, meals, and optional beach time. If swimming is the whole holiday, we would weigh that cooler setting more carefully.

You are planning an early-year stop and want the sea without building every day around strong sunshine. We would choose January for a coastal city break more readily than for a swim-all-day holiday. Book a convenient base, use mornings for walking and sightseeing, and decide about the water from the conditions you find rather than the month printed on the ticket.
Less rain does not mean summer has arrived
Rainfall is lower than in December, while the air temperature above averages daytime and nighttime conditions. It does not describe every lunchtime or tell you how the water feels beside your hotel. Use this pattern to choose the kind of stay, then check the actual day before planning a swim.
We like that pattern for walks, relaxed breakfasts, and a few city visits. Less rain makes planning easier without guaranteeing a dry three-day stay. Keep air temperature separate from sea temperature, and consider the wind when thinking about getting out of the water. A dry change of clothes belongs in your beach bag even when the afternoon looks bright from your room.
Give calm days and windy days different plans
On a quieter morning, we suggest a walk near your accommodation followed by a look at a staffed beach. Swim only inside the marked area while lifeguards are present and allow it, following the flags and instructions. Let each person decide when to get out. Bringing swimwear does not create an obligation to stay in the water until everyone else has finished.
When wind makes the beach uncomfortable, move the focus into town. Breakfast, a visit, and an indoor café are a better use of the morning than standing on the shore waiting for a change. Check the latest conditions for Nha Trang Bay before leaving, while remembering that a model grid does not identify every local current. Keep young children beside their supervising adult, including when the beach seems quiet.

Book an island day because you want the activity
For a two-night stay, we would not book a boat simply because island hopping appears on standard itineraries. Decide what matters first: time on a beach, a seafood meal, or a diving activity. Ask where you actually stop, how long you travel, and which services are included. For diving, confirm the operating area and authorization for the specific activity before paying.
Put the outing in the middle of your stay and agree on date changes in writing. Confirm that the boat is permitted to leave, and avoid alcohol before and during the journey. Pregnant travelers, people with medical conditions, and families choosing activities for young children should consult a doctor about suitability. Postpone outdoor excursions during thunder, heavy rain, or flood warnings rather than replacing a canceled boat with another exposed trip.
If the group wants different things, split for one morning and meet for dinner. The people staying ashore can choose activities close to the hotel without spending the day waiting on a boat. Agree on the separate budget before booking. We favor this arrangement over buying an extensive package that only one person is excited about, then expecting everybody to participate to make it feel worthwhile.
Dress for a walk and carry the option to swim
Bring a light outer layer, comfortable footwear with grip, and clothes that are easy to change. Carry a towel, a dry outfit, and a bag for wet things if swimming is an option. Leaving all your spare clothes in stored luggage turns a short beach visit into an unnecessary return to the hotel. Keep children’s immediate essentials in one adult’s day bag where they can be reached quickly.
For a temple visit on the same outing, wear clothing that covers shoulders and knees from the start. This lets you move between breakfast and sightseeing without a detour to change. We suggest a small zipped bag for your wallet and documents on walks, with the items you do not need left at your accommodation. A lighter bag also makes it easier to choose a longer walk when the conditions are comfortable.
Check the holiday rather than assuming January means Tet (Tết)
Tet, Vietnam’s Lunar New Year, follows the lunar calendar. Check your actual dates before making assumptions about closures, transport, or holiday dining. If your stay overlaps the celebration, confirm the restaurants, transfers, and services you need individually. Do not assume every business shuts, and do not assume a normal weekly schedule applies. One confirmed meal and a prearranged transfer can remove much of the arrival-day uncertainty.
Outside the holiday, choose a hotel around walkable meals, an easy pickup point, and a rate your group is comfortable paying. A festive package adds little if all you need is a room. If your train or flight arrives early, ask about luggage storage, early check-in, and the charge for either arrangement before planning a long sightseeing day. You may prefer a short breakfast and a rest before going farther.

For an early arrival after an overnight journey, keep the first outing short enough to end when the room becomes available. We would save the longer walk for a rested morning instead of expecting the group to complete its busiest day before the first proper sleep.
Leave the sea as an option in a short itinerary
Keep arrival day to check-in, a nearby meal, and a short walk. On the full day, visit Po Nagar Cham Towers (Tháp Bà Ponagar) if conditions suit an outdoor visit, then have lunch and a break. Use the afternoon for an approved swim at a staffed beach or an indoor café if wind makes the shore unappealing. Leave the final morning for breakfast, packing, and onward travel.
We would choose January confidently for travelers who enjoy the coast as part of a city stay and do not need perfect swimming weather every day. If the beach itself is the whole holiday, compare the seasonal pattern in Nha Trang before deciding. A cheaper flight does not compensate for choosing a month that works against the activity you care about most.
FAQ
Should I plan a sunrise outing every morning?
We would choose one suitable morning and leave the others for rest rather than make the whole group short of sleep.
Do I need a room rate with breakfast?
Choose around your departure times and companions. A convenient nearby meal may suit you better than a fixed breakfast package.
Suitcase or backpack for two nights?
Choose for the transport you are taking. An accessible day bag matters more than the style of the main luggage.
