Things to Do in Hoi An (Hội An): Give the Old Town a Day
We would give the old town a daytime visit first, then add a beach, garden activity or separate excursion if you have the time and suitable weather.

Hoi An is often treated as an evening stop for lantern photographs. We suggest arriving while there is still a full day ahead. Historic houses, assembly halls and museums give the streets context, and you can return after dark if you want the evening atmosphere too. Spending every visit in the same crowded hours makes the town feel smaller than it needs to.
One day for the old town, two for a change of pace
For a day trip from Da Nang (Đà Nẵng), we would keep the main plan to the old town, a proper meal and a rest. Two days make room for a beach session, gardens or a cooking activity. With three days, consider a separate excursion, but choose it because it interests you rather than because your hotel offers a package.
Basket boats, tailoring, gardens and an evening river ride may look like small additions. Together, they create a day of transfers and appointments. We prefer one well-chosen activity to several stops where there is only time for a photograph. Families should plan the midday rest as carefully as the morning outing, particularly when the weather is hot.
Step inside a few buildings
The old town has VND80,000 and VND120,000 ticket packages with different admission entitlements. The VND80,000 package includes one choice of the Japanese Covered Bridge or Quan Cong Temple (Miếu Quan Công), plus two selected cultural buildings. The VND120,000 package includes additional museum access and three selected cultural buildings. Ask the official ticket desk which package applies and which properties are receiving visitors.
We would choose a historic house and an assembly hall or museum that matches your interests. Keep the ticket stub after using its individual entries. Trying to visit every possible property to reduce the price per stop can leave the buildings blurring together. Read one explanation properly, look at the structure and give yourself time to notice what differs from the next place.
The Japanese Covered Bridge is a useful point for understanding the town’s layout. Look at its roof and the water from either side before entering according to the ticket arrangements. If a narrow section is busy, continue along another street and return later. There is little value in holding up a passage while waiting for a completely empty photograph.
Give lunch its own place in the day
Cao lau (cao lầu), thick noodles with pork and crisp toppings, is our pick when you want a meal associated with the town. Chicken rice is a straightforward alternative. Ask about serving size and extras before ordering for a group. Lunch also gives you a chance to sit down properly instead of carrying on through the hottest part of a walking itinerary.
For the evening, choose a walk and a meal first. A river ride is optional. If you want one, agree on the boarding point, whether the charge is per person or per boat, the duration and life jackets. Take a boat only when the activity is permitted, avoid alcohol before and during the ride, and postpone during thunderstorms, heavy rain or flood warnings.
A two-day schedule with breathing room
Use the first morning for the old town and the buildings you select with your ticket. Have lunch, take a break, then leave the afternoon for a fitting if you ordered clothing or another short walk. Keep dinner close to your accommodation. On day two, choose a cooking class, gardens or basket boats as the main activity. Leave lunch unhurried and add the beach only if conditions and energy suit.
If My Son is your priority, replace the second morning rather than adding it to the village activities. An island outing deserves another day with room around it, away from a fixed departure from Hoi An. We would protect the first day for the old town, where you can adjust the walking without arranging another long transfer.
Book time for fittings, not just collection
Tailoring makes sense when your schedule includes time to return and request changes. Bring a reference image, discuss fabric, lining, construction and the fit you want, and get the final price and deposit terms in writing. We suggest starting with a small order so you can assess the result before commissioning several outfits.
Leave the final fitting before departure day. A pickup appointment immediately before your airport car leaves gives you little room to fix something that does not fit. Ask how alterations are handled and inspect the finished item on your body rather than only on a hanger. If you have just one afternoon, ready-made clothing may suit the trip better.
Choose the ride you actually want
The Bay Mau coconut-water-palm area (rừng dừa Bảy Mẫu) around Cam Thanh (Cẩm Thanh) offers basket-boat outings. Before paying, establish the boat capacity, whether the quote includes area admission and the rower, and whether performances form part of the trip. If you want a gentle paddle rather than spinning, say so in advance. We would choose time among the palms over an activity selected only for its most dramatic video clip.

Wear a correctly fitted life jacket and keep children within an adult’s immediate supervision. Seek medical advice before water activities if you are pregnant, have medical conditions or are bringing young children. Keep belongings compact and use waterproof protection for your phone. Postpone in thunderstorms, heavy rain or flood warnings; being close to shore does not remove the hazard.
Pick between gardens and a beach afternoon
Tra Que (Trà Quế) suits travelers interested in vegetable growing or a cooking session. For a class, ask about the actual location, market visit, dishes, dietary needs and time spent cooking. Programs with similar names can involve different places and activities. Choose according to what you want to do with your hands, rather than the largest number of dishes listed.
An Bang Beach (An Bàng) works as a slower alternative when conditions allow. Confirm charges for chairs, umbrellas and changing facilities separately from your food order. Swim only inside the buoyed area when lifeguards are present, following flags and instructions. If swimming is restricted, keep the beach meal or change the plan instead of searching for an unpatrolled stretch.
Give My Son a separate outing
My Son suits travelers interested in Cham history and brick temple architecture. Agree on round-trip transportation, usable time at the site and admission before booking. We would not squeeze it into the same half-day as basket boats and a clothing fitting. Walking shoes, water and sun protection contribute more to the visit than a long list of photo positions.

Keep an island day conditional on the sea
The Cham Islands need a separate offshore day. Confirm that departures are permitted, where the boat leaves and what happens if the trip is canceled. Ask about life jackets and the specific activities authorized at the proposed sites. Avoid alcohol before and during the journey, and do not stand on or touch coral. Travelers with medical conditions, pregnant travelers and families with young children should obtain medical advice first.

We would leave this outing flexible rather than anchoring a short visit to a nonrefundable final-day booking. Hoi An’s rainy period generally runs from September into January, and flooding can disrupt riverside plans. Follow current warnings rather than treating a seasonal calendar as permission to travel. The connection between Da Nang and Hoi An also deserves planning before you commit to a fitting or a last return ride.
FAQ
Should I book every activity through one business?
Only if the quote identifies each service, its operator and change terms. Booking convenience should still leave you a clear choice.
What if our group wants different things?
Keep a shared meal and split for an afternoon. A fitting appointment does not need to occupy every traveler.
What suits departure day?
We favor a light plan near the accommodation, leaving time for packing and unfinished errands rather than a distant appointment.
