Which Night Is the Hoi An (Hội An) Lantern Festival?

The event falls on lunar day 14, rather than day 15. We suggest arriving in the late afternoon and staying overnight if you want time for the old-town activities.

Check your intended hotel night against the calendar before paying. The full-moon label can lead travelers to book the following evening. Once the date is settled, we would keep the afternoon light and eat early so dinner does not become a search for a table during the busiest part of the walk.

Dates from November through the following October

This table converts lunar day 14 to Gregorian dates using Vietnam’s time zone, covering November 2026 through October 2027. Use it to choose your overnight stay. Outdoor programs remain subject to the weather and local operating notices.

Old Town Night is a monthly cultural event, not the only evening when Hoi An has lanterns. If your trip misses the date, we would still consider an overnight stay rather than remove the town from the itinerary. The reason to seek this particular evening is the community activity as well as the lighting.

Start with a short circuit, then stop where something interests you

We suggest arriving in the late afternoon and identifying the route back to your room or pickup point before dark. Make a manageable circuit through the old town and the riverfront, with enough time to pause at a performance instead of rushing after a checklist.

Old Town Night activities include family music groups, traditional instruments, poetry, chess, and folk games. bai choi (bài chòi) combines a game with sung calls. If it is unfamiliar, spend a little time watching rather than take one photograph and move on. Programs at different locations do not necessarily start or finish together.

For older relatives, choose an accessible place to sit and a clear meeting point if the group separates. Keep children close beside the river. A small bag carried in front is easier to manage in a crowd than a bulky shopping bag or luggage you still need to store.

Old-town admission and a river ride are separate purchases

The published visitor-ticket options are VND80,000 and VND120,000, with different included visits. The VND80,000 option includes the Japanese Covered Bridge or Quan Cong Temple (Miếu Quan Công), plus two selected heritage buildings. The VND120,000 option includes one of those first two sites, the museum system, and three selected buildings. Confirm the ticket applicable to you at the counter and keep the stub.

We prefer visiting buildings during the day, then leaving the evening for the streets. An admission ticket does not mean every historic house stays open all night. If one interior matters to you, visit it first and check its posted hours instead of returning at the end of the evening.

Published pedestrian hours for the old town run from 9 am to 9:30 pm in summer and 9 pm in winter. Phan Chau Trinh (Phan Châu Trinh) has a separate window beginning at 5:30 pm. Follow the traffic controls in place and arrange a car pickup outside the restricted area.

Take a boat if you want the river ride itself

We see the boat as an optional part of the evening. Walking beside the river still lets you enjoy the lighting. If you want to board, use a point displaying its prices and confirm the total for your group, the ride length, and whether floating lanterns are included.

A price per boat differs from a price per passenger. Establish whether you share with others, where you board and return, and whether a correctly sized life jacket is available for a child. Board only when operation is permitted, use a suitable life jacket, and avoid alcohol before and during the trip.

Postpone during thunderstorms, heavy rain, or flood warnings, even if you have already bought a lantern. Do not step onto flooded stairs to reach one or take a picture. Water looking quiet from the promenade does not establish whether a boat trip is safe.

An overnight stay is our preferred arrangement

If the evening is a reason for your trip, staying in Hoi An removes the need to watch the clock for a return car to Da Nang (Đà Nẵng). Choose accommodation within a comfortable walk, ask how to reach it during traffic restrictions, and leave your bags before going out. A slightly cheaper distant room can add two vehicle journeys.

For a day trip from Da Nang, settle the return arrangements before leaving. Agree an accessible pickup pin outside the pedestrian streets and save the contact details. Tell the provider directly if the time changes. The transport choice from Da Nang to Hoi An should work with the return you need that evening.

For the evening itself, we would pick one meeting place with a distinctive shopfront or entrance, then save its map location on everyone’s phone. A general instruction to meet by the river leaves too much room for confusion. Set a time to regroup before leaving for dinner or transport. If someone prefers to sit out part of the walk, choose the seating first and let the rest of the group make a short circuit from there.

Leave souvenir shopping until you know how much you want to carry. A delicate lantern is awkward beside the water or in a crowded performance area. Ask the shop to demonstrate how it folds before paying, then keep it dry on the return journey. We would spend the earlier part of the evening walking with free hands.

Larger lunar festivals have their own programs

The first full moon of the lunar year and the Mid-Autumn Festival have significance beyond the monthly event. Do not assume their programs from the ordinary Old Town Night schedule. The first-month Nguyen Tieu (Nguyên Tiêu) celebrations can involve religious and cultural activities across several days, as locally announced.

From around September toward the end of the year, pay particular attention to central Vietnam’s rain and floods. Check access to the town and your accommodation, not just the forecast icon. Postpone during thunderstorms, heavy rain, or flood warnings. If access is restricted, follow local instructions and change the plan rather than search for another route into a closed area.

FAQ

Should I bring a large tripod?

We favor compact equipment in a busy street. If you use a tripod, keep the path clear and ask permission before setting up outside a home or business.

Do I need to rent traditional clothing?

No. Comfortable clothes and walking shoes are enough. Dress modestly when entering a religious site.

Can I photograph the performers?

Ask before taking close portraits, follow any posted restrictions, and keep the performance space clear. We would put the camera away if someone seems uncomfortable.
