Old Town or Beach: Where to Stay in Hoi An (Hội An)?
We favor the edge of the Ancient Town for a first stay; choose the beach when seaside time matters more than walking home after dinner.

Staying in Hoi An does not require sleeping inside an old merchant house. For most first visits, we prefer the edge of the Ancient Town, close enough to walk in but with a practical vehicle pickup. It gives you easy evenings without making luggage and transfers the center of the booking. Choose a room inside the historic streets because you want that setting, rather than assuming it is the only worthwhile option.
Start with the mornings and evenings you want
Before comparing properties, decide whether you want to step outside into town, a garden, or a beach neighborhood. Think about dinner too. Walking home after a meal feels different from arranging a car every night. We choose around the things repeated throughout the stay, rather than a single attraction visited once.
| Area | Best fit | Check carefully |
|---|---|---|
| Ancient Town edge | A first visit with walkable meals | Pickup access and noise |
| Tra Que (Trà Quế) | Gardens and a slower pace | Transport into town |
| Cam Thanh (Cẩm Thanh) | A stay centered on a garden property | Practical access to meals |
| An Bang (An Bàng) | Time near the beach | Sea conditions and town transfers |
| Da Nang (Đà Nẵng) | Fewer hotel changes, early flights | The return journey after each visit |
These familiar neighborhood and village names describe where you might stay, rather than provide a complete administrative address. Use the property name and exact entrance pin when booking transport. Two rooms described as “near the old town” can involve quite different walks if a bridge, narrow alley, or awkward road lies between them and your usual destination.
The edge is our practical first choice
The main advantage is control over the evening. Eat, walk a little farther, then return without gathering everyone for another ride. Look at the walking route from the actual entrance, rather than a straight-line distance. For a first visit, we favor clear access, reachable staff, and a comfortable room over the most dramatic exterior photograph.

A historic house has its own appeal, but ask about stairs, soundproofing, windows, and the bathroom arrangement. Light sleepers should request a room away from evening activity. Families need to know about railings, steps, and stroller access. These details are more useful than a photograph of lanterns over the doorway, particularly for several generations sharing a stay.
Vehicle restrictions apply in pedestrian areas. Do not assume a taxi can reach the lobby at any hour. Ask the property for the permitted drop-off point, the walk from there, and help with luggage if needed. We would want a specific pin rather than the vague assurance that a car can get “quite close.” Confirm the same arrangement for departure.
Choose the countryside when you will spend time there
Tra Que suits a stay with vegetable gardens and open surroundings. Cam Thanh offers a different setting associated with waterways and water palms. We would book these areas when the schedule includes time at the property, rather than leaving early for town every morning and returning only to sleep.

Check the evening approach, car pickup, and nearby food. Free bicycles do not solve every transfer: someone may not ride, the road may be wet, or the return may be after dark. If cycling is part of the appeal, ask about bike sizes, helmets, and storage. Keep a car option available when conditions make riding unsuitable.
For a field-facing room, ask for the view from that specific room and whether nearby building work affects it. Privacy, curtains, ventilation, and a comfortable bed deserve attention too. We would spend on those before a tiny pool used mainly for photographs. A peaceful-looking listing should support a comfortable full afternoon at the property.
Make the beach the reason to stay by it
An Bang is our choice when the vacation revolves around a beach neighborhood rather than repeated visits to town. Ask about the actual route to the sand: roads to cross, steps, and the current stretch directly accessible from the property. For Cua Dai (Cửa Đại), request recent photographs of the relevant frontage as well. A general image of the coast cannot answer a question about one hotel entrance.

Coastlines and swimming conditions change. We would not assume a beach is permanently broad or safe for swimming. Enter the water only inside the designated buoyed area with lifeguards present and flags permitting. Postpone beach activities during thunderstorms, heavy rain, or warnings. Pregnant travelers, young children, and people with underlying conditions should seek medical advice before strenuous or boat activities.
A beach room should remain comfortable when rain keeps you inside. Add the cost of rides into town for evenings when you want a different meal. A lower room rate is less useful if it pushes the group into transport they did not budget for. A beach vacation and an Ancient Town visit deserve different accommodation decisions.
Use Da Nang when avoiding another move matters more
For an early flight or a trip with only one Hoi An outing, we suggest retaining a Da Nang base. You avoid packing, another check-in, and moving everyone’s luggage. The trade-off is the ride back after dinner, when the group may already be tired. Agree on the return before the outing, including the exact pickup location.
If you want several evenings walking around the Ancient Town, sleep in Hoi An. Include the journey between Da Nang and Hoi An every time you compare costs. We would not choose Da Nang solely for a lower room rate if the saving will disappear into repeated transfers.
Safe access matters as much as the room
During the wet season, ask about the access road, help when warnings affect the area, and date-change terms. An upstairs room does not make a flooded entrance usable. Postpone an affected journey during flood, heavy-rain, or landslide warnings and follow local instructions. Avoid treating a property’s reassurance as permission to cross an official barrier.
Before paying, get the total for the actual guests, meals, extras, and cancellation deadline. Keep the room confirmation, map pin, and contact number offline. Once the base is settled, group activities around Hoi An by location so that each day involves less retracing the same roads.
FAQ
Should I move from town to the beach mid-stay?
Only when each base gets enough time to justify moving. For a short stay, we would keep one room and make a beach outing.
What should remote workers ask about?
Ask about a desk, chair, outlets, room position, and support if the connection fails. Pool photos do not establish a workable room.
Should a family request rooms on the same floor?
Yes if members need to help one another. Request confirmation before arrival rather than assume rooms in one booking will be adjacent.
