Hanoi (Hà Nội) Airport to Old Quarter: Bus 86 or a Car?

VND50,000 buys one bus 86 ride; we favor a car for families, several suitcases or arrivals that leave little time before the last bus.

Noi Bai (Nội Bài) international Terminal 2.

Open your hotel’s exact address before leaving the arrivals hall. Then confirm whether you are at the domestic or international terminal. Those two details matter more than choosing the cheapest ride in advance. We suggest bus 86 for travelers with manageable luggage and time for a final walk or short ride. A car makes more sense for families, several suitcases or a late arrival.

Compare the whole journey to your door

The Old Quarter is an area, not one drop-off point. A bus fare buys the bus journey; your hotel may still be some distance from the useful stop. A car booking also needs a realistic endpoint if your accommodation sits in a narrow lane or a street with vehicle restrictions. Send the hotel a message asking where a car can actually stop.

We would favor a direct car when the alternative involves several tired people moving luggage between vehicles. For a solo traveler with a backpack, the bus can be a comfortable budget choice. Compare the total for your group, including the last connection, rather than one person’s bus ticket against an entire car.

Bus 86 costs VND50,000 per person

Bus 86 links Noi Bai Airport with Hanoi Railway Station. The published airport-side service window is 7:00 a.m. to 10:05 p.m., with departures at roughly 25-30 minute intervals. Treat that as a transport timetable, not a promise that a late flight will connect. Immigration, baggage collection and the walk out of the terminal all happen after landing.

Follow the terminal signs for public buses and identify route 86 before boarding. Show the attendant your complete hotel address and ask which stop makes the most sense. Saying only “Old Quarter” leaves too much room for a poor connection. Keep the stop name on your phone so you can follow progress after the bus reaches the city.

Have small-denomination cash available, confirm the accepted payment method and keep your ticket. Put large bags where staff direct you, leaving the aisle clear. Keep passports, phones and a small valuables bag with you. If rain is forecast, place an umbrella or rain layer somewhere accessible rather than underneath everything in your suitcase.

A cheaper bus only helps if its route fits

Route 17 serves Long Bien (Long Biên) at VND15,000, while route 07 serves Cau Giay (Cầu Giấy) at VND12,000. They are different routes, rather than discounted versions of bus 86. Check the endpoint and your onward connection before choosing one. We would not send a first-time visitor with several bags through multiple changes simply to save on the first ticket.

If someone is meeting you at a bus endpoint, share the exact stop and agree on a meeting place before boarding. A relative waiting in the Old Quarter and a traveler arriving elsewhere in the city can otherwise spend more time finding each other than the original saving was worth. Keep enough phone battery for that last part of the trip.

Confirm T1 or T2 when arranging a car

Terminal 1 handles domestic flights; Terminal 2 handles international flights. The designated waiting areas for contracted vehicles are at halls A and E on the ground floor of T1 and the eastern end of the ground floor of T2. For a particular app booking, follow its current pickup instructions and the airport signs rather than assuming every vehicle uses the curb outside your exit.

Message your driver with the terminal, door or column you can identify, your party size and luggage. A photograph of the sign beside you can resolve confusion faster than repeating that you are “outside.” Use designated pedestrian routes to reach the pickup. If the driver’s directions conflict with the signs, ask airport staff before moving across traffic lanes.

Use the fare for your actual booking

Grab and Green SM offer car-booking options. Enter the full destination and inspect the map pin before confirming. The app quote reflects that booking time and location, rather than a permanent airport fare. Establish whether airport access, road charges, parking or waiting are included. A price remembered from someone else’s trip is a poor way to judge today’s complete quote.

Match the plate and driver with the booking before loading your bags. Keep communication within the booking where possible. If someone approaches claiming to be your driver but the details differ, continue contacting the driver through the app. A lower spoken price is not a reason to abandon a booking with a clear record.

For a taxi, use the official pickup area and confirm whether the journey uses the meter or an agreed total. Ask what is added to that amount, and retain the company and vehicle details. Read the currency and number of zeros carefully. If you cannot agree on the price calculation before departure, choose another vehicle while you are still at the staffed airport.

A hotel transfer earns its value through clear arrangements

Send the hotel your flight number, arrival date, terminal, group size and luggage count. Ask for a written total and the procedure if your flight is delayed or baggage takes longer than expected. Establish the waiting allowance and how you contact the greeter. Families needing a child seat should request it explicitly; a car with enough passenger seats does not settle that question.

Agree on a way to identify the correct greeter, using your booking details and flight information. If you cannot find them, call the hotel using the contact in your accommodation confirmation. Stay in a well-lit, staffed part of the arrivals area while sorting it out. Hand over luggage after you have established who is collecting you.

Keep arrival day loose

Ask your hotel for the point a car can reach, the remaining walking distance and any help available with bags. This matters particularly for older travelers and anyone with reduced mobility. Save the address offline, including the Vietnamese version, so a weak connection does not turn the last corner into a problem.

Leave a gap before a restaurant reservation or paid activity. The airport journey, hotel check-in and getting everyone ready again are separate tasks. Once you know how much of the day remains, a visit to the Temple of Literature (Văn Miếu Quốc Tử Giám) is easier to schedule without rushing straight from the arrivals hall.

FAQ

Should I book an activity immediately after check-in?

We would leave a gap before the first appointment. A delay at the airport can otherwise disrupt the whole afternoon.

What should a companion without mobile data carry?

Write the hotel name, address and contact on paper, and agree where to wait if you become separated.

What helps if I leave something in a vehicle?

Keep the ticket or booking, plate number and journey time so the operator can identify the correct trip.
