Travel Vietnam With a Plan for Roads and Weather
We put transport and weather decisions ahead of worrying about every sales pitch. They have a more direct effect on the risks you take during the trip.

One person wants to rent a scooter, another has booked an island trip, and the return flight leaves little room for delay. That is the point to adjust the itinerary, before debating which pocket should hold the wallet. Independent travel in Vietnam is manageable, but different activities call for different preparations.
Choose transport for the least confident traveler
We would not make a motorbike the default just because rental is inexpensive and easy to find. If you are unfamiliar with dense traffic, traveling with young children, or have balance problems, choose a car for longer journeys. A shop’s willingness to rent does not establish that your license covers the vehicle.
Self-driving requires an appropriate recognized license and applicable insurance. A car category does not substitute for a motorcycle category. Wear a properly fitted, fastened helmet, avoid alcohol before driving, and stop or change drivers when tired. A demanding mountain route is a poor place to learn.
On a coach, use a working seat belt. Do not choose overnight travel solely to save a room if you already know you sleep badly on buses. With taxis and app rides, match the vehicle and driver to the booking, retain the journey in the app, and choose a sensible place to get out.
Use suitable crossings and pedestrian signals when walking. Watch turning traffic even when the signal allows you to cross. Help older relatives cross together rather than leave someone hesitating behind the rest of the group.
Establish the unit of sale before comparing a price
Seafood by weight, a boat by the trip or passenger, and a beach chair with or without an umbrella are different purchases. We agree the quantity, unit, and expected total before using a service. That small conversation removes much of the uncertainty around a bill.
For accommodation or tours, check the business identity and payment details through its official channel. Retain a confirmation with dates, passenger count, inclusions, and cancellation terms. Pressure to transfer money immediately is a reason to slow down and verify the details.
If the bill differs from the agreement, ask for an itemized explanation and speak to the manager. Keep evidence without allowing a dispute to become a confrontation. The booking checks for Nha Trang hotels and tours help with the steps before a deposit.

Put the phone away before walking beside traffic
Petty theft and bag-snatching occur in busy visitor areas. We split cards and cash, carry bags away from the traffic side, and step somewhere safe to read a map. Avoid leaving a phone at the edge of a street-facing table while your attention moves elsewhere.
On an overnight bus or train, keep documents and valuables in a small bag with you. If a thief grabs something, do not fight over it when that could pull you into traffic. Move to safety, block cards and devices, and report the incident. Store document copies somewhere accessible if your main phone disappears.

Arrange the ride home before another drink
Save your accommodation address and keep enough phone charge for the return. Use an official booking channel, identify the correct vehicle, and share the trip with a companion when useful. If someone becomes unwell or intoxicated, have a trusted person accompany them home.
Order and watch your own drinks, and avoid accepting an already opened drink from someone you do not know. Alcohol of uncertain origin can contain methanol, which cannot reliably be identified by smell or taste. Seek urgent medical care for serious unusual symptoms after drinking; leaving someone alone to sleep it off can delay help.
Check the route as well as the destination
A sunny forecast beside your hotel says little about a pass or another area on the journey. Postpone activities during thunderstorms, heavy rain, or flood and landslide warnings affecting the route. Do not walk or drive into floodwater to assess how deep it is.
Central Vietnam needs particular attention to storms and late-year flooding; mountain routes add flash floods, landslides, and poor visibility. We leave extra room before a separate international flight when the itinerary includes mountain roads. Follow access restrictions and change the plan instead of searching for an unofficial way around a closure.
Discuss the actual itinerary with a clinician
Before traveling, review routine vaccination and itinerary-specific protection such as hepatitis A, hepatitis B, or typhoid with a clinician. Japanese encephalitis, rabies vaccination, and malaria prevention depend on where you go, how long you stay, and what you do. A single checklist is not suitable for every visitor.
Bring regular medication and a record of relevant conditions. Pregnant travelers, people with medical conditions, and families with young children should discuss demanding road trips, boats, and diving before booking. Keep medicines in labeled packaging rather than substituting something from a nearby shop without advice.
Prevent mosquito bites in cities too, using appropriate repellent and clothing. Choose thoroughly cooked food served hot, suitable drinking water, and clean hands before meals. After an animal bite or scratch, wash with soap and water and seek medical care promptly for a rabies-risk assessment.
Make the swimming decision at the beach
Swim only inside the buoyed area with lifeguards present, following flags and instructions. Strong swimmers still need those limits. Other people entering the water are not evidence that it is safe. Keep children under close adult supervision throughout their time beside the water.
Take a boat only when departure is authorized, with a suitable life jacket for each passenger and instructions on using it. Avoid alcohol before and during the journey. Postpone for thunderstorms, heavy rain, or flood warnings rather than move to another boat simply because its operator agrees to leave.
Keep a second way to pay somewhere separate from your everyday wallet. Before leaving the accommodation, save its name and location offline and tell a companion about any separate outing. We would also keep the insurer’s assistance number with the policy details, rather than rely on finding the original email during a problem. If you need help communicating, ask the accommodation to write the destination or explain the issue in Vietnamese.
Read the activities covered by the policy
A travel-insurance label does not tell you whether motorbikes, trekking, diving, or rescue are covered. Read the conditions on licensing, altitude, depth, preexisting conditions, and medical transport. Give a companion access to the assistance number and policy reference.
In an emergency, move to safety, call the appropriate service, and provide a clear location. Emergency calls may need a Vietnamese speaker, so ask someone nearby to assist. After urgent treatment is arranged, contact the insurer and keep medical records, invoices, and any necessary police report. Insurance authorization should not delay emergency care.
FAQ
What should I do if my passport is stolen?
Report it to the local police and contact the embassy or consulate of the country that issued it. Retain the police report for replacement documents and an insurance claim.
Should I check prescription medicines before entering Vietnam?
Yes, particularly controlled medicines. Keep original packaging and the prescription, and establish import requirements with the relevant authority before traveling.
Is it safe to feed dogs or cats at tourist stops?
We suggest keeping your distance and avoiding feeding or petting them. An apparently friendly animal can still bite or scratch when startled.
